Национальная экономика — это совокупность хозяйственных единиц (правительство, физические лица, частные бесприбыльные организации, предприятия, фирмы, компании) , деятельность которых в преобладающей части осуществляется на территории страны. Платежный баланс данного национального хозяйства учитывает либо операции хозяйственной единицы отечественной экономики (residents entity) с остальными странами мира, если эта единица является резидентом указанного национального хозяйства, либо операции экономической единицы с данным национальным хозяйством, если эта единица не является его резидентом. Использование двойной системы проводок исключает возможность возникновения каких-либо несоответствий в балансовой ведомости (balance of payments statement) из-за разночтений в трактовке общей концепции резидентства или статуса отдельных экономических единиц.
